8 Best Small-Cap Gold Stocks — October 2026
Eight small-cap gold stocks under $2B — five producers, one royalty company and two developers — ranked on our September 20 score snapshot, after the Fed's September hike and an 8% gold pullback.
Gold enters October 2026 in a corrective phase rather than a breakout. Spot traded at about $4,278/oz on September 24, 2026, down roughly 8% from $4,674 a month earlier. The trigger was the Federal Reserve: on September 16 the FOMC raised the federal funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, its first hike since 2023, stating that inflation remains elevated. Going into the hike, the physical and investment bid was intact: central banks bought a net 289 tonnes in Q2 2026, up 62% year-over-year; the People's Bank of China added 20.2 tonnes in August, its 22nd consecutive monthly purchase; and gold-backed ETFs absorbed 121 tonnes in August alone.
That mix — a hawkish Fed, a price roughly 8% below a month ago, and a bid that was still adding through August — tests small-cap gold differently than the consolidation in our September gold list. A pullback sorts producers by cost curve and separates balance sheets that are genuinely net cash from those the model merely labels that way. Small caps are the sharp end of that sorting: a small producer sells its ounces into spot and keeps the spread over AISC, so a lower price and rising costs both land on its cash flow with little else to absorb them. The eight names below trade under a $2 billion market cap and are ranked by our September 20, 2026 score snapshot. The list mixes three profiles: producers, a royalty company, and two developers whose value is optionality on a project decision rather than this quarter's margin.
Why the Small-Cap Gold Setup Is Different After the Fed Hike
-
The Fed moved against gold; the structural buyers were still adding through August. The FOMC hiked because inflation remains elevated, and gold's response was an 8% monthly pullback, not a collapse. The latest demand data, which runs to August, shows a bid that had not gone away: Q2 central-bank purchases of 289 tonnes were up 62% from 177.9 t a year earlier, the People's Bank of China had bought for 22 consecutive months, and ETF investors had put US$29 billion (160 tonnes) to work year-to-date. Whether that bid held through the hike is not yet in the data.
-
The margin math survives the pullback — unevenly. Three Q2 2026 all-in sustaining cost prints from this list still leave well over $1,500 of margin per ounce at roughly $4,278 spot: Idaho Strategic at $2,262/oz, Caledonia at $2,678/oz and McEwen's Fox Complex at $2,701/GEO. But costs are moving with the price — Caledonia's Q2 AISC was up 48% year-over-year and McEwen lifted Gold Bar's AISC guidance to $2,900-3,200/GEO — and a further gold retreat hits the highest-cost ounces first.
-
The score reads trailing fundamentals; the filings do not always agree. Our ranking is a September 20 snapshot of trailing fundamentals, and its "net cash" runway label needs reading against the balance sheets: it holds for Elemental, Galiano, Idaho Strategic and TRX, is better described as cash-neutral for Caledonia once $150M of convertible notes are counted, and does not hold for McEwen, which carried roughly $51M of net debt at June 30, 2026.
The honest bear case: the cost curve on this list is not built for a much lower gold price, and the risks do not stop at costs. Caledonia plans to layer up to US$450M of Bilboes project debt onto a cash-neutral balance sheet just as its AISC has risen 48% in a year. Galiano has 45,000 oz of 2026 production collared with a $3,060/oz call strike, capping its share of any Q4 rally. A large share of McEwen's reported earnings comes from San Jose dividends that the mine's operator, not McEwen, controls. The developers carry financing risk: Collective's PEA is not due until H2 2028, while Mayfair's C$450M initial capital bill sits against C$22.9M of cash.
The Names
CMCL — Caledonia Mining Corporation
Score: 86.7 (EXCELLENT) | Market cap: $0.49B | Revenue YoY: +46.2% | Rule of 40: 88.6 | Cash runway: net cash
Caledonia operates the Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe and is building the Bilboes project. Q2 2026 delivered 17,360 oz, revenue of $75.9M, EBITDA of $45.8M and net profit of $30.0M, with the $0.14 quarterly dividend kept. The 86.7 score reflects 46% revenue growth and 0.2% dilution, but read the "net cash" label as cash-neutral: $171.8M of cash at June 30, 2026 sits against $150M face value of 5.875% convertible notes due January 2033 plus roughly $18M of local facilities. Costs are the second caveat: Q2 AISC of $2,678/oz was up 48% year-over-year, and full-year AISC guidance rose to $2,500-2,700/oz. The October catalyst: first contractors are expected on site at Bilboes in October 2026, with first production targeted for late 2028 — and the funding is not yet closed: credit approvals cover over 50% of a US$150M Zimbabwe bank facility, and due diligence on a US$300M project-finance facility is ongoing. → See full CMCL score card
ELE — Elemental Royalty Corporation
Score: 84.6 (EXCELLENT) | Market cap: $1.36B | Revenue YoY: +167.4% | Rule of 40: 184.2 | Cash runway: net cash
Elemental Royalty is the gold-focused royalty company formed by the Elemental Altus and EMX Royalty merger — 18 producing assets, more than 200 royalties, and Tether as its largest shareholder. Q2 2026 was a record on volume: 5,248 GEOs sold, revenue of US$23.8M and adjusted EBITDA of US$17.4M, tracking toward the upper end of 17,000-21,000 GEO guidance per management. The 84.6 score reflects 167% revenue growth, a 62.6% gross margin and a debt-free balance sheet (US$74.2M cash at June 30, 2026); the 161.7% twelve-month dilution is merger share issuance, not cash burn. The Vizsla Royalties acquisition closed September 14, 2026 for roughly C$82M in cash plus about 8.1M Elemental shares, adding a 2.0-3.5% NSR on Vizsla Silver's development-stage Panuco project in Mexico — a royalty that pays nothing for years if the build slips. → See full ELE score card
GAU — Galiano Gold Inc.
Score: 81.7 (EXCELLENT) | Market cap: $0.58B | Revenue YoY: +93.6% | Rule of 40: 127.7 | Cash runway: net cash
Galiano owns 100% of the Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana, and Q2 2026 confirmed the back-half plan: revenue of $156.6M on 35,247 oz sold at $4,432/oz, net income of $61.9M, and AISC of $2,473/oz inside unchanged $2,300-2,600/oz guidance, with 77% of Q2 mined ore from the higher-grade Abore deposit. The 81.7 score reflects 93.6% revenue growth, 0.8% dilution and no debt, with $80.0M of unrestricted cash at June 30, 2026. What the score cannot see is the 2027 inflection: zero-cost collars cover 45,000 oz of 2026 production with a $3,060/oz call strike but fall to 7,500 oz in 2027, and a deferred payment is settled in December 2026, so management points to a cash-flow inflection from January 2027. The specific risk is the June 22, 2026 garnishee order freezing $25.9M of subsidiary cash, which Galiano is appealing. → See full GAU score card
IDR — Idaho Strategic Resources, Inc.
Score: 80.6 (EXCELLENT) | Market cap: $0.50B | Revenue YoY: +64.6% | Rule of 40: 102.2 | Cash runway: net cash
Idaho Strategic mines gold at the Golden Chest in northern Idaho, a profitable US-domiciled producer. Q2 2026: 3,047 oz produced, revenue of $10.7M (+13%), net income of $3.65M (+32%) and an AISC of $2,262/oz — up 16% year-over-year but still roughly $2,000 below the Q2 realized price of $4,277.53/oz. The 80.6 score reflects a 61.8% gross margin, 64.6% revenue growth and a net-cash position: $8.2M of cash plus $64.2M of US Treasury notes against $2.1M of notes payable at June 30, 2026. Two things the score does not price: the new Golden Chest mill under construction, and the heavy-REE discovery at Diamond Creek announced in July 2026, with surface samples averaging about 1.8% TREO. At roughly 9.8x sales the price already credits an REE story with no resource, no metallurgy and no timeline to revenue; if gold retreats, that premium compresses first. → See full IDR score card
TRX — TRX Gold Corporation
Score: 71.8 (SOLID) | Market cap: $0.37B | Revenue YoY: +40.0% | Rule of 40: 67.5 | Cash runway: net cash
TRX Gold operates Buckreef in Tanzania, and on September 14, 2026 it reported record fiscal Q4 production of 8,173 oz and fiscal 2026 production of 29,650 oz, up 57% from 18,935 oz. Fiscal Q3 (ended May 31, 2026) showed 6,983 oz sold at $4,703/oz, revenue of $32.9M, a 59% gross margin and $26.8M of cash, essentially debt-free. The 71.8 score reflects 40% revenue growth and a 41.5% gross margin from the existing 2,000 tpd plant, nothing of the expansion: upgrades to that plant are complete, and the new 3,500 tpd SAG/ball mill contract was executed in early fiscal Q4 2026, completion expected within 12-18 months. The company put the whole expansion, upgrades included, at $45-50M in April 2026. What remains falls on $26.8M of cash, operating cash flow and undrawn credit lines; a weak quarter during the build means slower construction or dilution, and 15% twelve-month dilution is precedent. → See full TRX score card
MUX — McEwen Inc.
Score: 57.3 (SPECULATIVE) | Market cap: $1.19B | Revenue YoY: +13.2% | Rule of 40: 6.7 | Cash runway: net cash
McEwen Inc. is new to this list: a gold-silver producer with the Fox Complex in Ontario, Gold Bar in Nevada, a 49% stake in Argentina's San Jose mine and a 46.3% stake in McEwen Copper. Q2 2026 was two-speed: Fox produced 7,000 GEOs at a $2,701/GEO AISC with 2026 guidance raised to 20,000-23,000 GEOs; Gold Bar produced 5,842 GEOs with guidance cut to 30,000-33,000 GEOs at an AISC of $2,900-3,200/GEO. The 57.3 SPECULATIVE score reflects a 24.1% gross margin, and the "net cash" label does not hold here: $78.9M of cash at June 30, 2026 against $130M of debt principal, roughly $51M of net debt. What the score cannot value is McEwen Copper, which closed a US$240M term loan on August 27, 2026 to advance Los Azules toward a mid-2027 investment decision. Gold Bar is the thesis-breaker: it earns little at $4,278 gold and loses money if gold slips further. → See full MUX score card
CNL — Collective Mining Ltd.
Score: 47.1 (SPECULATIVE) | Market cap: $1.48B | Revenue YoY: n/a (pre-revenue) | Rule of 40: n/a | Cash runway: 43 months
Collective Mining is the better-funded of the two developers here: the Guayabales project in Caldas, Colombia, where Agnico Eagle is a roughly 15% shareholder. The October story is the maiden Apollo resource of September 8, 2026 — 37.0 Mt at 2.17 g/t AuEq for 2.58 Moz AuEq indicated plus 2.83 Moz AuEq inferred, at US$3,000/oz gold — followed on September 24 by a new tungsten-gold zone outside the Apollo breccia. The 47.1 SPECULATIVE score is a pre-revenue reading carried by the balance sheet: 9.3% dilution, 43.3% insider ownership and US$93.7M of cash at June 30, 2026, which the company says fully funds the 2026 program. The catch is pace: cash fell from US$129.6M at end-2025 to US$93.7M by June 30, faster than the 43-month runway implies, with the environmental licence application not due until H2 2027. → See full CNL score card
MINE — Mayfair Gold Corp.
Score: 43.8 (SPECULATIVE) | Market cap: $0.21B | Revenue YoY: n/a (pre-revenue) | Rule of 40: n/a | Cash runway: 52 months
Mayfair Gold is the second developer: its Fenn-Gib project in Ontario's Timmins district hosts a 4.3 Moz indicated resource, and the January 8, 2026 pre-feasibility study chose a deliberately small initial phase — a 1.04 Moz probable reserve, C$450M of initial capital, 71,336 oz per year over the initial six years and a life-of-mine AISC of US$1,292/oz. At the study's US$3,100/oz base case the after-tax NPV(5%) is C$652M with a 24.1% IRR. The 43.8 SPECULATIVE score is a pre-revenue reading resting on zero debt and a 52-month runway — and H1 2026 spend ran faster: cash fell from C$38.2M at year-end 2025 to C$22.9M at June 30, 2026, and the company states it will require additional financing. That gap is the thesis: funding the build means a strategic partner, a stream or a large raise before a 2028 construction start, with 22.9% twelve-month dilution as precedent. → See full MINE score card
How to Think About Position Sizing
The score tiers do not line up with the risk tiers. By grade the list reads four EXCELLENT (CMCL, ELE, GAU, IDR), one SOLID (TRX) and three SPECULATIVE (MUX, CNL, MINE). The producers — Caledonia, Galiano, Idaho Strategic, TRX and McEwen — deliver ounces into the current price and keep the margin, so the pullback matters most to them: Idaho Strategic's Q2 AISC of $2,262/oz and Galiano's $2,473/oz absorb a lower gold price more comfortably than McEwen's Gold Bar at a guided $2,900-3,200/GEO. The royalty company, Elemental, captures the price with a 62.6% gross margin and without direct cost exposure, which is why the market pays roughly 19x sales. The developers, Collective and Mayfair, are options on a project decision, priced on drill results and financing terms rather than this quarter's margin.
The EXCELLENT tier is therefore not a uniform core: Caledonia and Galiano both carry a dated risk the score cannot see — Bilboes financing and the Ghanaian garnishee order — and Idaho Strategic's premium partly credits a rare-earth story the score does not price. McEwen, net debt rather than net cash, is better sized as a Los Azules option than as a gold producer. Collective says its 2026 program is fully funded; Mayfair's financing gap is the more immediate of the two.
